There is a state of emergency within the industry of music. The myth portrayed in music videos of artist living a lifestyle of glamour and luxuries, has the minds of many believing this is what the business of music is all about. I’m not saying having wealth is bad, I’m saying that the image is false. It’s a business that requires a lot of work; you have to be on the grind all the time, if you want to make it. This article(in part) will help musicians and entertainment companies overstand how distribution deals work and how to get a distribution deal.

Distribution is a key element in creating an income from your company and music. There are many types of Distribution deals between distributors or major record labels, which can include traditional (brick and mortar) distribution, which means getting your music on shelves in music retail and other retail outlets. Then you have internet distribution; the sales of a physical CD (record), or a digital download. This first part will touch on brick and mortar distribution.

There are many types of distribution deals between major record labels and independent distributors, the most common are (1) pressing & Distribution (P&D), also known as Manufacturing & Distribution (M&D), (2) Distribution only , (3) Fulfillment deal, (4) Piggyback Deal, (5) Joint Venture deal, (6) Production deal, (7) Equity Deal, (8) Rights Buy-out deal, (9) Licensing of music (records) to a major record label, (10) The Licensing of music (records) from a major record label.
In this first part I will touch on P&D (Pressing & Distribution) Deals and Distribution only deals. Basically these two types of deals are very similar in nature. A P&D deal is when a distributor manufactures (presses) your records (music) and distribute it for the independent record company. A distribution only deal is when the in the (your) independent record company manufactures the records and deliver them to the distributor or major label to be distributed thru the channels.

Before you get all excited, know this. You must have or create a buzz before any distributor or label will even consider dealing with you. And for those thinking about distributing their music on a national level, you better have a budget of $10,000 a month for marketing and promotions.
